Présentation
Two paintings discovered in the Saint Antoine church in Loches have recently been the object of studies and restorations which concluded that they were two of the four paintings bought from Caravaggio by the Cardinal Philippe de Béthune, the French ambassador to Rome from 1601 to 1605. He had them registered in the inventory of his possessions in 1608 where they were recorded as originals. The analysis of these paintings from the beginning of the 17th century has shown many similarities with paintings already certified as Caravaggios. Classified as “Monuments Historiques” (national ancient monuments of historic interest) in 2002, they can be seen at the Chancellerie.
