Go back in time and discover one of the most beautiful fortified cities in France. The 36 metre high KEEP was built by Foulques Nerra, the Comte d’Anjou, at the beginning of the 11th century. As well as being one of the most imposing buildings of its period in Europe, it is also one of the best preserved. The LOGIS royal is nearby. This jewel of the French Renaissance, a special place in the history of France, was the favourite residence of the reigning Valois dynasty. The Logis welcomed Joan of Arc, Agnès Sorel and Anne of Bretagne.

Known in ancient times as « Belli Locus » the town was built around the Abbey, founded in 1007 by Foulques Nerra, the Count of Anjou. An old monastic city, it contains many religious buildings: the Abbey, Saint Laurent church, Saint Pierre church, Sainte Barbe chapel, the Priory and the Templars House as well as 14th century residences, the leper hospital, the House of Agnès Sorel and the Pillory House...

The Abbey of Cormery was founded by Ithier in 791. His successor, Alcuin, imposed the Benedictine order on the 20 monks of Cormery. In 1054, the Abbey was rebuilt and extended. From 17th to 18th century, the monastery declined and the Revolution emptied it of its furniture, stones, beams and the tombs in the choir. Only the Romanesque Tower remains.

This 13th century fortified village belonged to the abbey of Marmoutier and its role was to accommodate the monks, who had a lake dug (14th century) to supply them with fish during Lent. The painter Delacroix stayed there several times.
